What Is a GIF File?

A GIF file is a raster image in the Graphics Interchange Format. Its defining limit is color: a single GIF can use at most 256 colors from a palette. In return it compresses without losing those colors, supports transparency, and can hold multiple frames that play as a short, silent, looping animation.

TL;DR

GIF is a 256-color format built for simple looping animations, not photos. Convert it to JPG or PNG when you need a still frame or a lighter image.

A GIF can display only 256 colors at once, against the roughly 16.7 million a JPG or PNG can show, which is why photos look banded when saved as GIF.

What GIF Does Well

GIF shines for short looping clips and simple graphics. The animation plays automatically and silently in almost any browser, email, or chat app, with no player or plugin needed. For flat-color graphics like icons and basic logos, the 256-color palette is plenty and the file stays small.

A GIF loops forever by default and has no sound. That is exactly why reaction clips and tiny how-to loops are shared as GIFs rather than video files, which need a player and a tap to start.

Where GIF Falls Short

The color limit makes GIF a poor fit for photographs, which turn flat and banded. For real video, modern formats are far more efficient: an animated GIF of a clip is often many times larger than the same clip as MP4 or WebP. GIF survives on universal support, not on quality.

A long or high-resolution animated GIF can balloon to several megabytes, far heavier than a short video of the same scene. For anything beyond a few seconds, a real video format saves a lot of weight.

How to Convert a GIF File

When you need a still image from a GIF, or a lighter file for a photo-like frame, a batch converter saves GIF images as JPG or PNG at the size and quality you choose, turning a folder of them in one pass.

What you'll need
  • Batch Picture Resizer: converts and resizes GIF images to JPG or PNG on Windows
  • A Windows PC, version 10 or 11
  • The GIF files you want to convert
